TruGreen is supporting National Pollinators Week from June 18 to June 24 to help celebrate the benefits of bees and other pollinators for a healthy ecosystem. Bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators play an important role in regulating agriculture and contributing to our food system. By pollinating many of our gardens, they are providing us with a nutritious diet. In fact, did you know one in about every three bites of food we eat comes from a pollinator? Without these pollinators around many of our favorite foods such as apples, berries, oranges and almonds will start to disappear from our grocery stores and farmers markets.
As early as 2006, beekeepers began to notice that
This year, TruGreen has partnered with Clean Memphis to bring more awareness to the local community about the importance of pollinators and ways we can help them survive and thrive in the Memphis area. Clean Memphis is a local non-profit organization that offers free environmental education throughout Shelby County and the city of Memphis. During Pollinator Week, they will be working with 18 different schools participating in the Superintendent’s Summer Learning Academy, teaching close to 1,000 third-fifth graders about the role pollinators play and how their loss impacts the broader environment. Each student will receive a TruGreen seed packet to plant and spread the word about pollinators to their families and friends.
If you’d like to get involved, consider planting a garden/flowers of your own. Planting pollinator-attracting blooms is a great way to ensure these pollinators are getting all the nutrients THEY need, so we can get all the nutrients WE need. For more information about Pollinator Week, click here.
